After trying Smashbox’s Cover Shot Smoky Palette, I was very curious to know how their lipstick products performed.

I figured I’d test out how their standard mattes matched up to their liquid mattes, and to do that I chose two colours that looked like the closest matches:
They both applied very opaque on the skin test, both seemed to match their colour descriptions, and both dried down fairly quickly.
First, I want to talk about the liquid lipstick, “Girl Gang”. When applying it to my lips, I noticed right away that I didn’t like the applicator. It’s harder and pointier than most applicators, and it’s pretty awkward to use.
The lipstick “Plum Scene” drags across the lips. I think this is probably something that is common with lip sticks rather than liquid lipsticks. I didn’t like how it applied. It felt like using a crayon.
Both lipsticks seemed to have the same problems: They went on streaky and patchy, I had to play with them to make the finish more seamless; and the colour feathered around the edges. The “Plum Scene” wore much drier than “Girl’s Gang”, but both seemed to last the same length of time – which was not long at all (maybe an hour) – before it started to wear away in the center of the lips.
I wasn’t overly impressed with either lipstick. Neither one applied nicely with just one coat. Both were very pretty purple shades, but it took more time to make them look nice than I would prefer to spend. It’s definitely important to get the matching lip liner otherwise the coverage will look sloppy. I would even suggest using a lip brush when applying both products.
I don’t think I would recommend these lipsticks to anyone, but if I was to recommend one over another it would be the “Girl Gang”, just because it allowed me to work with the coverage a bit easier.
